The Australian Curriculum v9, developed by ACARA, sets out what all young Australians should learn from Foundation (Prep) to Year 10. It provides a national framework that ensures students across all states and territories learn consistent, high-quality content regardless of where they live.
The curriculum is organised around learning areas (subjects), general capabilities (such as literacy, numeracy, critical and creative thinking, and digital literacy), and cross-curriculum priorities (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia, and sustainability).
Year Levels Overview
Foundation to Year 2 focuses on building foundational literacy and numeracy. Students learn to read and write, count and calculate, and develop social and emotional skills through play-based and structured learning.
Years 3 to 6 extend these foundations into more complex topics. Students deepen their reading comprehension, develop mathematical problem-solving skills, begin studying science inquiry, and explore history and geography.
Years 7 to 10 prepare students for senior secondary education. Content becomes more specialised, with students studying subjects like algebra, chemistry, physics, and analysing complex texts. Students begin to develop skills for independent learning and critical analysis.
Key Learning Areas
The Australian Curriculum includes eight key learning areas: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), The Arts, Technologies, Health and Physical Education, and Languages.
English develops listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing, and creating skills. Mathematics builds number sense, algebraic thinking, measurement, geometry, and statistics. Science covers biological, chemical, physical, and Earth and space sciences alongside scientific inquiry skills.
HASS integrates history, geography, civics, and economics. Technologies covers both Design and Technologies (creating solutions) and Digital Technologies (computational thinking and programming).
How US K–12 Standards Compare
The United States has no single national curriculum. Instead, most states build on shared standards: the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics, and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for Science. Social Studies, Technology and Computer Science, and The Arts follow their own national frameworks.
Key differences from the Australian Curriculum v9 include the grade naming (Kindergarten to Grade 10 rather than Foundation to Year 10), a stronger emphasis on disciplinary core ideas in Science, and standards written by subject rather than as a single integrated document.
