Victoria · Year 7 entry
SEAL practice that tells you the truth
Select Entry Accelerated Learning programs run at around 39 Victorian government secondary schools, and each school sets its own entrance test in Year 6. Qwizflow gives your child timed practice in the skills those tests measure — Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics — with a report that says which skills are solid, which are not, and whether they are working fast enough.
Pacing is the skill most children lose marks on
Sources disagree about almost everything to do with these tests, but they agree on one number: about 30 to 60 seconds a question, held for a full 30 minutes. So every practice section runs on a server-side clock, and the report separates getting it right from getting it right in time — Verbal Reasoning at 85% accuracy at twice the budget is a pacing problem, not a knowledge one, and those need different practice.
The five sections
The timings below are what the schools themselves publish. The question counts are ours — the test administrator does not publish per-section counts, and the figures quoted around the internet disagree with each other and have no primary source. So we say what our own practice does, and let the clock be the thing we design against.
Verbal Reasoning
30 minutes in the exam — our practice Verbal Reasoning section runs 40 questions in 30 minutes, about 45 seconds a question.
Numerical Reasoning
30 minutes in the exam — our practice Numerical Reasoning section runs 35 questions in 30 minutes, about 51 seconds a question.
Reading Comprehension
30 minutes in the exam — our practice Reading Comprehension section runs 35 questions in 30 minutes, about 51 seconds a question.
Mathematics
30 minutes in the exam — our practice Mathematics section runs 35 questions in 30 minutes, about 51 seconds a question.
Written Expression
15 minutes in the exam.
We do not offer Written Expression practice. The exam sets one timed task, narrative or persuasive, and we would rather say plainly that we do not cover it than list it and leave you to find out. Nothing in the other four sections depends on it.
What we will not tell you
Most of this market sells outcomes. We cannot honestly sell one, so here is exactly where our usefulness stops.
The exam is not the whole application
Schools also ask for recent school reports, a handwritten writing sample and a current teacher’s reference. We cannot help with any of those, and practising on a keyboard does not train handwriting.
Nobody publishes a pass mark
There is no published cutoff for any SEAL school, and places are offered on a ranking against the other children who apply that year. So we will never tell you a score you need, because no such number exists publicly.
We are not affiliated with anyone
We do not run, represent or partner with any school, and the Victorian Department of Education stopped accrediting SEAL programs in 2014 — so nobody can claim departmental accreditation, us included.
We do not rank your child against other children
We report what your child actually did — which skills, at which difficulty, and whether they were working inside the time budget. We do not show a percentile, because we have no proper comparison group and inventing one would be worse than saying nothing.
Set your child up for SEAL practice
A parent sets up the account and gives consent first — every candidate is 11 or 12, so nothing runs until a grown-up says so. Free to start.
