Grade 1
Grade 1 turns counting into arithmetic. Students add and subtract within twenty, read simple text independently rather than being read to, and write sentences another person can follow. The change families notice most is independence: the work is short, but a child is expected to start it alone.
Mathematics
Addition and Subtraction Within 20
Add and subtract within 20 using counting on, making ten and known fact families.
Place Value to 120
Count, read and write numbers to 120, and understand a two-digit number as tens and ones.
Science
Light and Sound
Set up tests showing that a vibrating object makes sound, that sound can shake a material in turn, and that we only see things where light reaches them.
English Language Arts
Phonics and Reading Fluency
Decode one-syllable words, read common irregular words on sight, and read grade-level text with accuracy and expression.
Technology and Computer Science
Computing Systems and Devices
Level 1A (grades K-2): name the parts of a computing device, choose the right tool for a task and describe simple hardware problems.
