Grade 8
Grade 8 builds what high school assumes: linear functions, the Pythagorean theorem, systems of equations, and the first systematic work with scientific models. Students are expected to transfer a method between contexts rather than recognise a familiar question shape.
Mathematics
Linear Equations and Functions
Solve linear equations and systems, interpret slope as a rate of change, and compare functions shown in different ways.
The Pythagorean Theorem
Work through why the Pythagorean relationship holds in any right triangle, then use it to find a missing side length and the straight-line distance between two plotted points.
Science
Heredity and Natural Selection
Middle school band (grades 6-8): explain how genes carry inherited traits, and how variation and selection change a population over generations.
English Language Arts
Analyzing Text Structure and Theme
Trace how one sentence or section builds a theme, and explain what an author gains by arranging a text the way they do.
Social Studies
The Constitution and American Government
Civics, grades 6-8 band: analyze the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the three branches, federalism and how a bill becomes law.
The Arts
Responding to Theatre and Media Arts
Responding: interpret a dramatic or media work, apply criteria to evaluate it, and support a judgment with evidence from the work.
