Grade 9 is the first year of high school and the first whose record follows a student. Quadratic and exponential relationships arrive, science moves to systems and energy transfer, and analytical writing is assessed on structure and evidence rather than effort.

Mathematics

Quadratic Functions and Equations

High school band: factor and solve quadratic equations, and graph parabolas to identify intercepts and the vertex. Common Core sets high school mathematics by conceptual category rather than by grade, and states place this work in different course years.

Systems of Equations and Inequalities

High school band: solve systems algebraically and graphically, and model constraints with inequalities.

Science

Ecosystem Dynamics and Human Impact

High school band (grades 9-12): model carrying capacity and energy flow, and evaluate solutions for reducing human impact on biodiversity.

English Language Arts

Central Ideas and Rhetoric

Grades 9-10 band: trace a central idea across a text and evaluate how an author uses rhetoric to advance a point of view. Common Core sets high school ELA in 9-10 and 11-12 bands rather than by single grade.

Social Studies

Economics and Personal Finance

Economics, grades 9-12 band: reason about scarcity and incentives, how markets set prices, and budgeting, credit and saving decisions.

Technology and Computer Science

Networks and Cybersecurity

Level 3A (grades 9-10): explain how networks move data, evaluate common threats and encryption, and reason about privacy and safe practice.
