Kindergarten is almost entirely spoken and hands-on. Children count and compare small groups, name shapes, hear the individual sounds inside words, and tell someone about something that happened. The aim is not assessment — it is that school makes sense and that a child will attempt something unfamiliar.
Mathematics
Counting and Cardinality
Recite the numbers as far as 100, in single steps and in tens, write the numerals up to 20, and judge which of two groups of objects holds more.
Shapes and Their Attributes
Name and describe flat and solid shapes, and build bigger shapes out of smaller ones.
Science
Pushes, Pulls and Motion
Investigate how the strength and direction of a push or a pull changes the motion of an object.
English Language Arts
Letter Sounds and Print Awareness
Recognize letters and the sounds they make, follow print from left to right, and hear and say the parts of spoken words.
